A.M. Best has been reporting on European insurers since its inception. In 1907, A.M. Best published the company's first special report, which detailed losses from the 1906 San Francisco earthquake involving 243 insurers, some of which were branch operations of European companies. Best's Ratings on European insurers continued to grow, and in 1985, Best's Insurance Reports-International, was launched. Today, the rating coverage of Best's operations includes regional and national insurers, as well as global organizations, located throughout Europe and the United Kingdom, the Middle and Near East as well as Africa.

In the late 1990s, A.M. Best purchased Financial Intelligence & Research Ltd. (FI&R), a well known provider of insurance market software and services. Best Europe as the region's premier source of insurance company financial ratings and information.
